News CRWC set to defy gravity tonight Anti-Gravity Festival will mark end of month-long competition on the rock-climbing wall by FAITH DEGGINS
The Campus Wellness and Recreation Center is hosting the first Anti-Gravity Festival, an indoor rock-climbing event, at 7 p.m. tonight. The festival marks the finale of a month-long competition consisting of 60 students climbing the 53-foot-tall rock wall without falling and while following restricted routes. Students had one month to complete five climbs to be recorded in the competition. Festivities will include a movie about rock climbing, a contest to break any competition ties and an awards ceremony. Trophies will be awarded to the top-ranking men and women in beginner, intermediate and advanced categories. Event sponsors, Smoothie King, Baptist Student Ministries and Mad Rock Climbing, donated prizes to be raffled off to competitors. As of the start of Spring 2006, students and CWRC members no longer had to pay $3 to climb. "We got rid of all the rental fees," Bryan Ng, assistant director of campus recreation, said. Media production junior Kristen Douglas said paying for equipment in addition to the $75 student fee was too much to ask. "I never climbed the wall before because when the Wellness Center first opened it cost $6," Douglas said. "But I might start now when I feel like having a little fun." Outdoor Adventure, the organization that oversees the wall's operations, cut the cost to scale the wall because of the overall increase in student fees on campus. There has been increased activity at the rock wall since the abolishment of the rental fee, Ng said. "We are having record participation for the month of February. We are 200-plus percent over last year's participation," Ng said. Health senior Bola Atobajeun said she is taking advantage of the free rental. "I think it was an exhilarating experience because I've never really done something like that before." Atobajeun said. "When I heard that it was free, I decided to hop on it." Outdoor Adventure is open from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The shop is located behind the basketball courts
near the outdoor pool.
