Life & Arts Boots and beats Hall-of-famers, Grammy winners and platinum artists kick off Rodeo by CHRISTIAN OCHOA
Powerhouse acts of the music industry will be spotlighted at the 75th annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, adding another notch to its already monumental belt. And just like all things in Texas, the rodeo will be big -- even from the beginning. Kicking off the show Tuesday is George Straight. A recent inductee of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait is one of three performers who have performed to more than a million people at the rodeo over the years. Other country acts slated for this year's show include Reba McEntire, Clay Walker and Gretchen Wilson. Making her 16th appearance at the show Thursday, McEntire is also an owner of two Grammy Awards, and her 30 albums have sold over 49 million copies. Walker, a native of Beaumont, Texas, has been in the country music business for over a decade and his first four albums reached platinum status. He takes the stage March 3. Wilson, who is the first artist with a debut album entering the charts at No.1 and 2, returns to the Rodeo Houston March 6. Wilson's first album, Here for the Party, sold over 5 million copies. But for those who never developed a taste for country, there are some acts that will please rock and pop music enthusiasts. The "Texican" rock ‘n' roll trio, Los Lonely Boys, will take the stage Wednesday. Their hit single, "Heaven," made them a mainstream act back in 2003. One of music's contemporary rock stars, Sheryl Crow will please the crowd March 7. Crow's 1993 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club, placed her on the map and paved the way for her multi-Grammy-winning status. Crow was scheduled to perform in last year's rodeo, but took some time off her tour to receive breast cancer treatment. Another powerhouse female act will dazzle the crowd at Rodeo Houston: Beyoncé. The hometown sweetheart will take the stage March 15. Her career began with the group Destiny's Child but she quickly moved to bigger projects with her solo career. The multi-talented artist won five Grammys for her solo debut, Dangerously in Love, and has continued her solo career with her latest release, B'Day. The rodeo will also include shows that will please the little ones, or for those who promised to take their little sister to the rodeo. Disney Channel's Hannah Montana and The Cheetah Girls will take the stage Sunday. A popular show on the children's network, The Cheetah Girls have recently found musical success by recording the soundtrack to The Cheetah Girls 2. And for Hannah Montana, performing live on stage runs in the family. Daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus had a No. 8-selling album under her belt in 2006, and it sold over 2 million copies. Rodeo Houston will also host Black Heritage Day on Friday and Go Tejano Day on March 11. Natalie Cole will take the stage with KEM for Black Heritage Day. Cole won her first of eight Grammys in 1975 with her debut, Inseperable. The sounds of Monterrey, Mexico will be featured for Go Tejano Day with Pesado. "The little band from Texas" will cap off the big
show March 11. Houston-based trio, ZZ Top, will make their third appearance
at Rodeo Houston. The trio, which was named "Official Texas Heroes" by
the Texas House of Representatives, has toured since 1969 and is still
attracting new fans.
