Houston sweeps field at weekend tournament

Shamblin provides huge highlight with no-hitter

UH used dominant pitching and timely hitting to win all six of its games in the Marriott Houston Hobby Invitational over the weekend at Cougar Field.

Head coach Kyla Holas was pleased her team got back on the winning side of things after the Cougars dropped both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against National Fastpitch Coaches Association No. 16 Baylor.

"We wanted to go 6-0 (in the tournament), get our swagger back and get better at some things and I think we did that," Holas said.

The Cougars (13-6) ended the tournament Sunday by beating Iowa State 4-0 and New Mexico State 4-3.

Junior right-hander Angel Shamblin (7-3) pitched a no-hitter and struck out 14 while the Cougars' offense used sacrifice hits, stolen bases and clutch hitting to blank Iowa State in Sunday's early game.

With Sunday's late game against New Mexico State tied at three, sophomore infielder Haley Valis led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to left field.

In Saturday's games, UH overcame defensive and base running miscues to squeak by Iowa State 2-1 and New Mexico State 3-2.

Senior Candi Kloecker notched a complete game against Iowa State, her first of the season.

She allowed only three hits against the Cyclones.

Saturday's nightcap against New Mexico State remained scoreless until the top of the eighth inning when the Cougars' offense put three runs on the board.

Shamblin gave up a two-run homerun to Aggie Kristi Randell in the bottom of the eighth inning, but struck out Rishelle Gastelum swinging to seal the victory.

Friday's games saw masterful pitching performances by Shamblin and Love, who tossed shutouts in the Cougars' 3-0 victory over McNeese State and 7-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The two pitchers allowed a combined three hits.
