Sports Cougars have to wait longer for Hargrove by RONNIE TURNER
The Cougars have already played more than a fifth of their regular season schedule, but fans are still waiting to see junior right-hander Ricky Hargrove in action. Hargrove, who was put on the shelf in early February because of soreness in his throwing shoulder, has not pitched since last summer when he competed in the Cape Cod League as a member of the Chatham A's. The team recently sent a few samples of his MRI results off to internationally renowned orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., for further analysis. UH head coach Rayner Noble hopes to have a definitive answer on Hargrove's status this week. "Dr. James Andrews is one of the best in the country, and (we'll wait) to see his opinion," Noble said. Hargrove's absence has had a significant impact on the Cougars' pitching staff, which has depended on several young arms to start the season. So far, the weekend starting rotation of junior Aaron Brown (1-0) and freshmen Wes Musick (2-2) and Donnie Joseph has struggled, with each pitcher posting an ERA over 5.00. Starting pitching is an area Houston (6-6) expected
Hargrove would help strengthen this season. As a sophomore last season,
he compiled an 8-6 record with a 3.31 ERA in 22 appearances (14 starts).
