Opinion Event at DePauw is not a representation of Delta Zeta To the editor: While the incident at DePauw University, discussed in the staff editorial "Sorority's bad behavior ruins it for everybody" (Monday, Opinion), has become a national issue, it remains an isolated incident. I speak on behalf of the Delta Theta chapter of the Delta Zeta Sorority as well as the Greek community here at the University of Houston, when I say that we in no way condone discrimination of any kind. I strongly feel that The Daily Cougar misrepresented the Delta Zeta chapter on our campus and would like the opportunity to address the vital role that the Greek community plays at the University of Houston. Ever heard of Frontier Fiesta? It's one of our University's most proud and honored traditions, and takes place every spring at the hands of countless fraternity and sorority men and women. How about Homecoming? This past Homecoming awarded second place to Delta Zeta and first place to an Inter-Fraternity Council fraternity. For that matter, who do you think our Homecoming Queen is? She's a Delta Zeta. I challenge The Daily Cougar to set aside its preconceived notions about Greek life and embrace that we're a well-rounded, socially responsible, intelligent group of young adults. "Social" sororities and fraternities were founded in order to better prepare young men and women for the world beyond our University, by teaching responsibility and leadership and by helping young individuals to build their confidence. I feel proud that our Greek community has done an excellent job of fulfilling that legacy and I am proud to be a part of it. I am proud to be a Delta Zeta. Kayley E. Sanders
Editor's note: Monday's editorial was referring to the Delta Zeta chapter at DePauw University, not the UH chapter. It does not mention the UH chapter in any way. The overall lesson we can learn from this event is not to judge others by superficial means.
GLOBAL needs more support from students and faculty To the editor: I can't add much to Colleen Herndon's eloquent guest commentary "Hateful Speech has no place on campus"(Monday, Opinion) regarding the anti-gay "religious" group SoulWinners Ministries International visiting our campus last week, except to say that I am glad that Herndon and others are supporting the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people at UH against such verbal attacks. I also believe progressives on campus, staff, students
and faculty alike, should show their support by raising their own voices
the next time the Venyahs return, and to donate generously in the meantime
to GLOBAL, the campus organization that works on behalf of LGBT people
here. The Web site is www.uh.edu/global/.
