UH claims four of five at weekend tourney

Shamblin pushes record to 10-3 by claiming three of the
Cougars' four wins

The Cougars had a solid showing over the weekend at the Sun Devil Invitational on the Arizona State campus, winning four out of five games.

UH (17-7) defeated Utah Valley State 7-6 and UC-Santa Barbara 1-0 in Friday's games. The Cougars beat Utah Valley State again 1-0 but lost to National Fastpitch Coaches Association No. 2 Arizona State 2-1 on Saturday.

UH concluded the tournament with a 2-0 victory over North Florida on Sunday.

Junior right-hander Angel Shamblin shut down the North Florida offense, allowing only three hits while striking out nine batters over seven innings.

The Cougars' offense was by no means potent (three total hits), but it took advantage of two Osprey defensive miscues in the bottom of the sixth inning to score the only runs of the game.

Shamblin (10-3) also came up big Saturday. Against ASU, the Florida native fired 5.2 innings of shutout relief while striking out five batters.

"Angel continues to prove that she is our ace," UH head coach Kyla Holas said in a release. "She rose to the challenge of facing a very strong Arizona State lineup."

The Cougars' offense showed their weak side once again, however, compiling only one run on only three hits against ASU right-hander Megan Elliot.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth inning, UH had a chance to put some serious runs on the board against ASU but came up empty.

"Timely hitting with runners in scoring position is something that has plagued our team," Holas said in a release. "We need to execute in those situations and find a way to score runs."
