News Passport regulations may change Spring Break plans In accordance with a recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, U.S. citizens traveling by air to Mexico, Canada and the Bahamas by air must now present a passport when arriving at or leaving their destination. Traveling to U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands still only requires a driver's license. Passports cost $97 for persons over the age of 16, and $82 for those under. Although it usually takes six weeks to receive a passport, a $60 fee can be paid to expedite the process, in which case the passport will arrive in two weeks. Passports can only be applied for in person at locations such as post offices and probate courts. Proof of U.S. citizenship, two self-photographs and legitimate identification are required. Some tourist establishments in the Bahamas and Jamaica are willing to reimburse passport expenses paid by American travelers.
