News Team takes swing at cancer Softball squad will host Breast
Cancer Awareness Game

When the Cougar softball team takes the field Wednesday, it won't be solely to notch another win -- the team will also be battling breast cancer. Hanging up their scarlet red, the Cougars will don pink and albino white jerseys as they take the field for their first Breast Cancer Awareness Game against nationally-ranked Texas A&M at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Cougar Softball Stadium. A silent auction for the pink jerseys worn by the team will be held during the doubleheader against the Aggies, with the proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure Houston Affiliate. Nordstrom, mother of sophomore starting catcher Elaina Nordstrom and a breast cancer survivor, will throw the ceremonial first pitch. "When I first told my mom, she was really excited about the event and to be throwing out the first pitch," Elaina Nordstrom said. "She's been joking around about warming up her arm but is probably going to be really emotional at the game." The team hopes to increase breast cancer awareness at Wednesday's game. "Any time we can do something as women in sports to enhance and support something as crucial as breast cancer awareness, it's important," head coach Kyla Holas said. "We want to show our support and hopefully get everyone out in recognition of the event and in honor of Veronica Nordstrom." Other items to be auctioned include a KitchenAid mixer and utensils, pink iPods and digital cameras. "I think (the event) will be a big deal because of the fact that we're bringing a lot of awareness into breast cancer and we've been promoting it for a long time," Elaina Nordstrom said.
