University finance gets top 10 ranking

Department in Bauer College of Business rated No. 8 in the country 
on Academic Analytic's Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index

Finance students in the Bauer College of Business may truly be getting their money's worth, as the department ranks among the top 10 most productive in the nation, according to a new national assessment of faculty productivity.

UH's finance department ranked eighth nationally in the 2005 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index of graduate programs published in the Chronicle of Higher Education. 

"We've recruited faculty who are among the most productive and talented researchers in the field," Praveen Kumar, professor of finance and department chair at the Bauer College, said in a press release. "Our research has been highly cited, given the Enron debacle, energy trading issues and the strong interest in profitable investment strategies. We intend to build upon current strengths, since the department has been recognized as a leader in these fields."

The rankings were compiled by Academic Analytics, LLC, a company that creates academic rankings of higher education institutions based on industry data.

The FSPI measures the productivity of a department's faculty based on factors including awards, citations in academic journals and federal research funding.

Academic Analytics said the FSPI was designed to create a standard for the measurement of academic quality, and that the creation of the index arose from the need to assess academic performance using a single criterion.

The FSPI ranking measures a department's productivity and impact in the finance field rather than spotlighting individual faculty members.

Finance and marketing senior Monique Inocente said she isn't surprised by the department's rainking and is enjoying her experience as she moves into more specialized courses.

"It's been pretty good so far. I'm really getting into my finance classes now and getting a feel for it, and it's been interesting," she said. "Some of the classes I'm kind of forced to learn things on my own, but then there are some other really great ones where I feel like I'm really gaining a lot, and I can apply the lessons outside of class as well."
