Letters to the Editor Rep. Coleman deserves thanks for all he has done for UH To the editor: The Daily Cougar published the guest commentary "Texas in need of additional medical schools" (Feb. 15, Opinion) by Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Texas, regarding his support for medical schools at the University of Houston and Prairie View A&M. Beginning in the early 1990s when UH was faced with losing substantial funding because of enrollment and formula decreases, he was there for us. Without his help as a member of the Appropriations Committee and his considerable influence as a member of the Conference Committee, UH would not have secured millions of dollars for tuition revenue bonds to construct the Science and Engineering Research and Classroom Complex and renovate many old buildings on campus. Always the champion of the less fortunate, he is responsible for helping thousands of students attend college through the TEXAS Grant and Teach for Texas programs. Rep. Coleman has fought many more battles to aid the University without public acclaim, but I will end by noting that he laid the groundwork for what has become the Research Development Fund -- our "Tier I" program. Suffice to say, Rep. Coleman has always been there for UH, and we cannot thank him enough for it. R. E. Reamer
