Texas A&M next on Cougars' slate

Game 1 of doubleheader vs. Aggies will promote breast cancer awareness

by LEE CLARK
The Daily Cougar

The Cougars will participate in their first-ever "Breast Cancer Awareness" game when they face Texas A&M in the first game of a doubleheader at 5 p.m. today at Cougar Softball Stadium. The second game is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m.

Texas A&M, which is ranked fourth in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, owns a 19-2 record and has one of the best offenses in the country. The Aggies are batting .325 as a team and average seven runs a game.

Houston, on the other hand, has a remarkable pitching staff led by junior ace right-hander Angel Shamblin (10-3). Opponents are batting only .206 against the Cougars' pitching staff, which currently sports a 1.22 ERA.

Houston (17-7) has used that strong pitching and solid defense to win 10 of its last 11 games. However, the team continues to struggle at the plate, hitting only .246 and averaging only about three runs a contest so far this season.

This is something that UH head coach Kyla Holas isn't too concerned with.

"As long as we consistently put the ball in play and we're able to advance our runners, I think that we're going to keep being successful," Holas said.

The matchup against nationally-ranked Texas A&M aside, Holas is excited about her program supporting breast cancer awareness.

"We want this event to go really well," Holas said. "We want the fans to come out and not only see what our team is about, but also to support this great cause."

To show support for breast cancer awareness, the Cougars will don pink jerseys instead of their traditional white home uniforms.

Veronica Nordstrom, mother of UH catcher Elaina Nordstrom and a breast cancer survivor, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch in Game 1.
