Sports Cougars land two at championship meet Floyd makes return trip to NCAA Championships By JONG LEE
The UH track and field team will send two of its members to the NCAA Indoor Championships, which start Friday and run through Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. The Div. I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced Monday that senior Ebonie Floyd and junior Ivan Diggs would represent the Cougars at the championship meet, which will be held at the Randal Tyson Track Center at the University of Arkansas. Floyd will compete in the 60-meter and 200-meter. She punched her ticket to the championship meet at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 9 with a 60-meter qualifying time of 7.27 seconds, the seventh fastest time in the NCAA. Floyd's 200 meters was clocked in at 23.11 seconds, the fifth fastest in the NCAA. For Diggs, this marks his first appearance at the indoor championships. He qualified in the high jump at the UH All-Comers Meet on Feb. 10. His provisional mark of 2.18m/7-01.75 was good enough for a bid to the championship meet. In 2006, Floyd qualified for the indoor championships as a member of the women's 4x400 meter relay team. The relay team finished in eighth place and set a school record with a time of 3:32.28. Last season was the first season back for Floyd after redshirting for the previous two seasons. At last season's Conference USA Indoor Championships, Diggs came up .03 meters short of a provisional invitation to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Diggs finished third on the high jump, clearing 2.14m/7-01.25. Floyd is set to compete in the preliminaries of the 60-meter at 6:15 p.m. Friday and the preliminaries of the 200-meter at 7:20 p.m. The 200-meter final is set to start at 8:55 p.m., and the 60-meter final will begin at 7:15 p.m. Saturday. The men's high jump competition will start at 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
