Faculty gives back through fundraiser

by GRANT MEHLHOFF

The UH community raised nearly $100,000 for the 13th annual State Employees' Charitable Campaign.

The SECC is a statewide workplace fundraiser that allows state employees to make tax-deductible contributions to hundreds of local and state charities through a payroll deduction or one-time gift.

More than 450 University employees donated a total of $97,126.

"Even though it's a statewide campaign, a lot of the money stays here locally," Elwyn Lee, vice president for Student Affairs and SECC steering committee chairman, said. "We benefit quite a bit from the city of Houston, so it's really good for us to give back to the community."

Although the total fell short of last year's $100,531, Lee said, the drive did see an increase in total donors.

The employees' contributions were impressive considering that the drive ran through the height of the holiday season, Lee said, and that employees didn't receive their bonuses until January after the campaign had ended.

"Even when the financial situation within the University wasn't that good, the University staff members still wanted to give and help others," he said. "That says a lot about their humanitarian spirit."

The campaign drive began in October and ran through December. All employees were sent a package containing a donation form, a list of charities and letters from UH President Jay Gogue and Lee urging faculty and staff to give what they could.

UH was recognized by the SECC for raising the third highest total among all participants statewide, including the state's other universities.

Since joining the SECC in 1995, UH has raised $1.21 million for charity through the program.

"I believe it's important to help students become more civically minded," Lee said.
