Sports Cougars pick up five victories in Invitational UH has noticeable first-place wins in Tom Tellez Invitational, including long jump and 4x100 relay COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES The UH track and field team started the outdoor season off on the right foot by claiming a combined five victories at the Tom Tellez Invitational this past week on the Lewis/Tellez International Track Complex. The Cougars snagged their first victory on Friday when freshman Hyleta Young picked up a gold medal in the long jump with a jump of 5.82m/19-01.25. Senior James Lee got things started for Houston on Saturday after he finished first place in the discus with a throw of 53.30m/174-10. Teammates sophomore Andy Tackett and freshman Brandon Hubbard didn't do too badly themselves, finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Freshman Alex Bentley was the top finisher in the pole vault, claiming the gold medal after clearing 5.05m/16-06.75. In the women's pole vault, senior Danielle Aanerud cleared 3.50m/11-05.75 to claim the silver medal. Also on the women's side, freshman Quin'shundolyn McPherson claimed victory in the triple jump with a leap of 11.79m/38-08.25. Senior Kelli Williams finished fourth. The Cougars claimed their final victory on Saturday in the 4x400 meter relay, where the men's team sprinted to the win in 3 minutes, 12.74 seconds. Also on the men's side, the 4x100 team took the silver medal with a time of 41.40 seconds. In the men's 400 meters, freshman Justin Davis finished second in the second section and freshman Pearson Crichlow won the third section. In the distance events, sophomore Jennifer Harper took the bronze medal in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 48.16 seconds. In the hammer throw, Amanda Villanueva finished third with a toss of 48.23m/158-03. Freshman Ashley Bryant took home second place in the discus with a throw of 45.95m/150-09. Senior Lucas Mireles was the top UH finisher in the hammer throw with a third place toss of 40.31m/132-03. A new meet record was set in the high jump. Will Littleton of UT-Pan America and Marcus Harris of Shore AC tied to set the record of 2.21m/7-03.00.
