Life & Arts Muslim filmmaker, activist to speak at UH screening Manji's documentary, which will be shown on PBS, addresses issues facing modern Muslim women COUGAR LIFE & ARTS SERVICES An internationally-famed journalist the New York Times has called "Osama bin Laden's worst nightmare" will visit the University today to shed light on the challenges of being a Muslim woman in the West. Irshad Manji's documentary, Faith Without Fear, which is based on her national best seller, The Trouble with Islam Today, addresses the issues facing progressive Muslim women and the problems they encounter in the search for self-expression. Manji is known for her outspoken opinions on Islam, such as her belief that Islam has lost the tradition of independent thinking. Faith Without Fear will be included as an installment in PBS' America at a Crossroads series. It will run from April 15 until April 20. America at a Crossroads features documentaries on post-9/11 society. The films in the series have dealt with subjects like theological and political divisions in the Muslim world and everyday Muslim life. After the screening, a panel discussion will be held featuring Manji, UH Associate Director of Women's Studies Dina Alsowayel, and other influential members of the Muslim community. The event is free and open to the public. Send comments to dcshobiz@mail.uh.edu |
