Life & Arts Two Star Symphony takes on dark theme Coming performance the third installment of the Danse Macabre series by RUTHIE RODRIGUEZ
String arrangements usually boast colorful, energetic sounds. Two Star Symphony, however, is a lively string group with a knack for drenching arrangements in deep and sinister undertones. The Houston-based octet will present the final concert of the three-part Danse Macabre series along with Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre on Saturday and Sunday at Talento Bilingue, 333 S. Jensen Drive. Two Star will perfrom Danse Macabre along with original compositions with Margaret Lejeune on cello and harp, Jo Bird on toy piano and viola, Debra Brown and Chenoa Mauthner on violin, John Duboise on clarinet, Kirk Suddreath on percussion, Chris Bakos on double bass, and Cathy Powers on marimba. The series was inspired by Camille Saint-Saens' symphonic poem in which the Dance of the Dead takes readers on a journey beyond death. Joel Orr, artistic director of Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre, wrote dark text to go along with the eerie scores Two Star is sure to deliver. "Goblin Attack" and "The Marionette" are Tim Burton-esque arrangements the octet will perform. "Goblin Attack" features a mesmerizing clarinet solo by Duboise with rich string work carried out by Bird on viola. The unsettling violin melodies performed by Brown and Mauthner enhance the intensity of the song. This selection, like most of the Two Star arrangements, features slow, drawn-out notes and sudden transitions into fast-paced string work layered with light percussion. In this song, Powers performs an intense melody on marimba. Tickets are $10. For more information, visit www.twostarsymphony.org or call Talento Bilingue at (713) 222-1213.
