Sports Solberg calls it quits to coach club team Second coach in team's history to go to Milwaukee by JONG LEE
Soccer head coach Bill Solberg announced Wednesday that he will resign to take a coaching position on the senior staff at FC Milwaukee, where he worked from 1997-98. "I'm extremely excited about the opportunity to coach with FC Milwaukee again," Solberg said in a release. "To work with the coaches I looked up to as a youth player and to work again for a club that gave me an opportunity right out of college is something I could not pass up." Solberg concluded his seven-year tenure at UH with a 50-69-10 record. Solberg was only the second head coach in the program's history. "It's bittersweet at the same time because my time at UH has meant so much to me," Solberg said. "I am thankful for the opportunity and support given to me by the administration here. I have learned so much from everyone here and will take some incredible memories and relationships." FC Milwaukee consists of 450 players and 25 coaches, ranging from U-8 to U-23. FC Milwaukee has players with collegiate and national experience. Solberg coached the FC Milwaukee U-15 Girls Blue team in the 1998-99 season, and he led it to a state championship and Midwest Regional Cup finals. "I chose club soccer because I want the opportunity to coach and train more players and teams," Solberg told www.fcmilwaukee.com. "I am also excited about the chance to coach boys' and girls' soccer teams." Solberg's resignation will become official April 1. "(Solberg) is a dedicated and talented coach, and we are lucky he wanted to return to Milwaukee at this time," Peter Knezic, FC Milwaukee director of coaching, told www.fcmilwaukee.com. "Our club's primary commitment is always the development and hiring of quality coaches and people. (Solberg) fits the bill perfectly." Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
