Life & Arts Reggae Hut offers island flavor Spicy Caribbean staples, veggie options on menu for those with a limited budget by MELANESE A. PHILBERT
Whether you're an island native and feeling nostalgic about being away from home, or just someone interested in trying Caribbean cuisine, the Reggae Hut offers an authentic taste. Though there aren't many items listed on the menu, the Reggae Hut sticks with tradition in making authentic dishes, such as oxtails served in brown stew. Brown stew is made by caramelizing brown sugar and oil, which can also come with chicken instead. Curry, a variety of spices and a staple in a many Caribbean dishes, is used in abundance with the curry goat, chicken and fish. The portions are huge and all main course dishes are served alongside a vegetable medley with rice and peas, which are actually red beans slightly crushed and mixed in with plain white rice and coconut milk for added flavor. For those who aren't starving but are looking for something to sample, a patty -- a warm, baked pastry filled with seasoned beef or chicken -- could hit the spot. Vegetarians should not feel left out -- the patties are available meatless, too. In addition, the menu offers several other vegetarian choices and the staff is open to suggestions on creating vegetarian dishes to diners' liking. Those who are getting ready for the summer and want lighter choices can choose from the jerk chicken salad, red bean soup and a variety of sandwiches, though these items aren't listed on the menu. Island drinks are also represented on the menu. The restaurant serves several bottled drinks, including sorrel, which is a derived from a flower and is very tart and served with lots of sugar. The restaurant is small and has a cozy, laid-back atmosphere. Reggae music plays at audible levels and the staff is accommodating. Most meals are under $10 and all are available for take-out. For those who are short on time, the lunch hour is the best bet, even though parking can be a little scarce. The Reggae Hut also offers catering services for those who are planning for an event or those who want just more than a regular serving. Send comments to dcshobiz@mail.uh.edu |
