Notable photographer to give a visual lecture

COUGAR LIFE & ARTS SERVICES

One of America's top photographers will visit the University today to deliver a semi-autobiographic speech with a slideshow presentation.

Sally Mann, who Time magazine named Photographer of the Year in 2001, is one of the most celebrated contemporary American photographers. "We are delighted to bring Sally Mann to the University of Houston. Sally Mann was a natural choice for our spring event. Through her lens we have been challenged to see our world in new ways, and this is exactly what Visual Studies at the University of Houston is all about," Tracy Xavia Karner, director of the Visual Studies Initiative, said. VSI is sponsoring Mann's lecture.

Mann first gained recognition in 1977 with her one-woman show in Washington D.C., which featured surreal images of a construction site. In 1992, critics blasted Mann and her second photo book, Immediate Family, over its content. The book contained nude photographs of her daughters, and some accused Mann of shooting child pornography.

Conservatives protested bookstores that carried Immediate Family over claims of child pornography as well. Mann's work is still being shown, though, in various museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Mann's latest work, Deep South, features photographs of mostly of rural areas in Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Virginia. The images, however, were taken with damaged and broken cameras that give a ghostlike effect with streaks of white light.

VSI's goal is promoting the community's examination and interpretation of visual imagery.

The event is free and open to the public.
