Mayor seeking a dialogue

Mayor White will give talk, take questions at forum designed to engage UH students on local issues

Mayor Bill White will visit campus Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. to discuss issues affecting the city and to have an open dialogue with students on campus.

The event, co-sponsored by The Daily Cougar and Student Video Network, will be held in the Pacific Room in the University Center Underground. In addition to speaking about city issues, White will touch on pollution and the environment during his 30-minute speech.

"The goal of the visit is for the mayor to get to know students at the University," event organizer Kristen Young said. "He wants to establish an open dialogue with students, hear their concerns and answer their questions."

Immediately following the speech, White will field questions from the audience. White is mostly interested in hearing what the UH Cougars have to say, said Young, a former editor in chief of The Daily Cougar.

Young said she became involved with this event from an internship through the Center for Public Policy at UH, which allows students to work with various politically related offices in Houston.

"This is an opportunity for students to speak with our city's highest elected official," she said. "It's a chance to hear what the mayor has to say about Houston and a chance for students to voice their concerns. It's also a chance to build a positive relationship between our city government and the University of Houston."

White was inaugurated in January 2004, and has played an important role in many city events, including the holding of Super Bowl XXXVIII and implementing the Stop Trashing Houston recycling program. In 2005 White was praised for his management during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
