News Money, talk at Honors event Experts lead discussions at the Great Conversation, where focus is fundraising by GUILHERME CUNHA
The Great Conversation, a banquet geared toward raising funds for the Honors College, will feature discussions on lofty topics today at the Houston Country Club. The event hosts a selection of UH scholars from a variety of subjects. They, in turn, hold their own discussion panels separated by different tables. UH experts leading the panels include UH President and System Chancellor Jay Gogue, Provost Donald Foss, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences John Antel, and Dean of the Honors College Ted Estess. Topics discussed at the fundraiser will cover a broad range of topics, from the effects of universities on the economy to the 2008 presidential election to the meaning behind self-portraits. Individual tickets for the event are $250, but different levels and types of reservations are available in price ranges up to more than $15,000. The average attendance to the event is more than 300 people, making this the Honors College's primary fundraising event. The money provided in the event goes toward scholarships and faculty-led events that need special funding. Jeff Dodd, a prominent lawyer and member of the Honors College Advisory Board, is co-chairing the event with Michael P. Jackson, deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a UH graduate. In 1994, the Houston Chapter of the National Society of Fundraising Executives selected The Great Conversation as the Outstanding Fundraising Program Special Event.
