UH expects nothing less than two victories

Cougars confident they'll take care of Bearkats

By RUTHIE RODRIGUEZ

After putting on a great showing against Memphis in a three-game series last weekend, Houston will head to Huntsville to take on Sam Houston State.

The Cougars will open their doubleheader against the Bearkats at 4 p.m. today at the Sam Houston State Softball Complex. The second game is slated to start at 6 p.m.

The Cougars (25-11) left Memphis on a good note by emerging from the series finale with a 15-3 victory. The team strives to continue the plate discipline that carried them through last weekend, and hopes to leave Huntsville with two more wins.

On paper, Sam Houston State (14-15) doesn't appear to be a major threat. The Cougars are confident the Bearkats won't prove to be troublesome.

"We should be able to take it to them pretty easily," sophomore shortstop Jessica Valis said. "We have a lot of momentum (left over) from last weekend and we're going to take it to them like we've done to everyone in Conference USA (so far).

A good performance in today's doubleheader would bode well for the Cougars, who'll host Alabama-Birmingham in a three-game series at Cougar Softball Stadium this weekend.

In any case, the Cougars are aware that they have to take each game just as serious as the next.

"We've learned that we can't take any team lightly. We have a tendency to sometimes play down to (our opponents') level so we need to keep playing at our level by going out there and giving them our best show," sophomore catcher Elaina Nordstrom said.

Nordstrom, one of the Cougars' main assets behind the plate and at bat, will try to improve upon her .275 batting average in today's doubleheader.

"Offensively I'm starting to come around," Nordstrom said. "I had a slump going on at the beginning of the season and I feel like I'm starting to put things back together. (I have to) just keep doing my job behind the plate and being a leader on the field."
