Opinion White's visit an important opportunity Kristen Young
Mayor Bill White is going to be on campus from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday to talk with UH students and despite the assumptions made by some, it's not a campaign stop. It was scheduled and arranged by UH students -- namely The Daily Cougar and the Student Video Network. The mayor genuinely wants to speak with UH students. He's an excellent public speaker and worth coming to hear. He wants to talk about the environment and other issues facing students in our city. He wants to know who attends our great University and establish a connection with Cougars -- an opportunity Cougars should jump at. I am a part of this event because I intern for the mayor's political consulting firm. As a former editor in chief of The Daily Cougar, I thought the opportunity to host the mayor's visit was one the Cougar couldn't pass up and suggested to Robyn Morrow, the current editor in chief, that The Daily Cougar become the official sponsors. The students at The Daily Cougar have worked tirelessly to publicize this event -- they've created ads for the paper, posted flyers, printed press releases and sent e-mails. Every minute spent encouraging students to attend the mayor's speech has been for the good of the University, and it's all been done between classes and after regular work hours. The mayor's visit is a chance we don't often get to become involved in our city, to speak with an elected official whose efforts to change this city affect all of us. The students at The Daily Cougar, the Student Video Network and even the Student Government understand this and only hope to encourage our fellow students to participate. The mayor will answer questions from students after a brief speech. If you have an opinion, a question you want answered, let Mayor White know. Be in the Pacific Room of the University Center Underground Thursday and show our city what this University is all about. Young, former editor in chief and an intern
