Sports Cougars make short work of the Bearkats by LEE CLARK
UH has a knack for dominating Sam Houston State on the softball field. The Cougars continued that trend by winning both games of a doubleheader against the Bearkats Wednesday night at the SHSU Softball Complex. In the second game, UH (27-11) scored a run in all but one inning en route to claiming a 7-3 win. With the doubleheader sweep, the Cougars extended their winning streak to three games and claimed their seventh victory in the last eight contests. The Cougars' offense was helped by sloppy defense from Sam Houston State (14-17). UH scored four unearned runs thanks to five Bearkat errors. The offensive stars for UH were sophomore outfielder Katie Bush, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, sophomore outfielder Laurie Wagner and junior infielder Samantha Cummings, who each homered. On the mound for UH was senior southpaw Carla Kennimer (4-0), who made only her third start of the season. The left-hander gave up three runs (two earned) on 10 hits while striking out five batters in her first complete game of the season. In the first game, UH got three home runs from three different players and cruised to a 7-2 victory. Sophomore infielder Haley Valis' three-run bomb in the third inning followed sophomore infielder Christa Raley's two-run shot in the first, and increased the Cougars' lead to 5-1. Sophomore infielder Jessica Valis followed her sister's round-tripper with a two-run homer in the fourth inning that gave UH its final runs of the game. Seven runs would prove to be adequate run support for junior starter Angel Shamblin (17-5). The right-hander surrendered only two runs on seven hits while racking up 10 strikeouts. Shamblin went the distance for her 17th complete game of the season. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
