UH swimming and diving collects a few more honors

COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES

The 2006-07 swimming and diving season has since ended, but the accolades haven't stopped coming in for the Cougars.

Sophomore diver Anastasia Pozdniakova, junior diver Ginni van Katwijk and freshman swimmer Jessica Shamburger received specialty awards Tuesday from Conference USA in recognition of their standout performances during last season.

Pozdniakova was named the C-USA Diver of the Year, while van Katwijk was honored as one of the league's two Newcomers of the Year. Shamburger was named Freshman Swimmer of the Year.

Her most notable accomplishments include claiming the 1- and 3-meter springboard titles at the C-USA championship meet and NCAA Zone D Meet, and finishing as the national runner-up on the 3-meter board at the 2007 NCAA Championships.

Van Katwijk, a transfer from Wyoming, finished second in platform diving at the C-USA championship meet, and advanced to the NCAA Championships, where she earned All-America honors.

Shamburger won the C-USA 100-yard backstroke championship in her first collegiate season. Her time in the 100-yard backstroke (56.36 seconds) was the second fastest in program history.
