Life & Arts Ceremony celebrates Tunisian students by MAYRA CRUZ
Three days after the Tunisian independence day, the student organization Tunisian Student Association in North America celebrated its educational achievements and culture Friday at the Athletic/Alumni Center. The event, which celebrated Tunisian culture and history, showcased TUSANA members' achievements. "The Tunisian student community is growing this year in the University student body. A couple of years ago, it was just two or three (students), and now they are like 15 or 20," said Nizar Aoune, president of the local TUSANA chapter. Guest speakers included professors from both Tunisia and UH who spoke at length about Tunisian culture and society to an audience of about 100 guests. Among the guests of honor was Tunisian ambassador Mohamed Nejib Hachana, who stressed the importance of education to the student community and recognized the students' efforts. In his speech, Hachana recalled the history of Tunisia as progressive and said it owed its successes to education and developing the human potential. The event concluded with an awards ceremony. Awards were given out to members who had made outstanding contributions to the organization throughout the year. "We hope to make this an annual event," Aoune said. "We're trying to get more and exposure, maybe recruit some other Tunisian students who might not know us by now." Since its inception in June 2006, TUSANA has been dedicated to networking and providing assistance for Tunisian students in both the United States and Canada, as well as promoting Tunisian culture.
