Dedication is key, local anchor says

Sachse advises aspiring broadcast journalists to be prepared to work long hours and take criticism

A KPRC-TV news anchor said self-confidence, credibility and knowledge of the industry are essential to being a successful broadcaster in a talk hosted by the Association of Women in Communications on Tuesday in the University Center.

"It will be hard at first, having no insurance and working at odd hours, but have a good attitude and always have an approach to improve in what you do," Dominique Sachse, a member of the UH class of 1990, said.

When she started out working at KTRK-TV and KLOL-FM as a traffic reporter, Sachse said she welcomed constructive criticism and always focused on honing her skills.

"Do what you need to do to improve. I use to roll back tapes and play them over and over again so see what the viewers were seeing," she said.

Sachse said being a reporter also means being prepared to cover stories that happen around the community.

Sachse also said giving back to the community is an important part of being a broadcaster, and that students going into the field should consider how much of their privacy they are willing to give up for the sake of the job.

AWC President Melissa Seuffert said Sacshe's talk taught her the value of humility in the professional world.

"What I will carry from her is to never look down on others; always be kind and true to yourself because you never know who will help you out," she said.
