Sports Track and field off to Tiger Classic Smith leads the Cougars east into LSU territory By JONG LEE
Fresh off a seven-win output at two separate meets last weekend, the UH track and field team will head to Baton Rouge to participate in the Tiger Classic, set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Cougars will not participate in today's decathlon event held at Bernie Moore Stadium on the LSU campus, instead opting to compete in the one-day meet. Houston will be the only Conference USA team participating in the Tiger Classic. The team will send one of its best runners junior Tremaine Smith to the meet. Smith holds the best time for the men's 100-meter dash in C-USA at 10.51 seconds, which he set March 17 at the Tom Tellez Invitational. He also claimed the 200-meter title at the C-USA Indoor Championships and ran on the Cougars' 4x400 meter relay team. The Tiger Classic is the third of seven consecutive road meets for the Cougars. The next home meet will be held May 5 when the Cougars host the Houston Invitational. In February, the Cougars sent four athletes to Baton Rouge for the LSU Twilight Invitational. Sophomore Jennifer Harper sprinted to a fourth-place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2 minutes, 20.95 seconds, and fellow sophomore Seun Adigun took second in the Section 1 finals of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.85 seconds. Houston also sent two male athletes, freshmen LaMarcus Hunter and Chaston Johnson. Hunter finished sixth in the first section of the hurdle finals with a time of 8.26, and Johnson won the Section 2 finals with a time of 8.47. The team hopes that it will be able to keep up its winning ways this weekend after putting together efficient performances at the TSU Relays and Texas Invitational last weekend. At the TSU Relays, junior Oumama Hallal won the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10 minutes, 26.58 seconds. Freshman Daniel Martinez won the men's 3,000 meters in 8 minutes, 43.67 seconds. The Cougars also claimed gold medals in the women's 1,600-meter sprint medley relay, the men's 1,600 sprint medley relay, and the women's 4x200 meter relay. At the Texas Invitational, freshman Alex Bentley won the men's pole vault and freshman Brittani Williams took first place in the women's javelin throw. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
