Sports Bush gets chance to lead Houston Houston native spent two years as assistant coach to Bill Solberg COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES It didn't take long for the UH soccer team to find its new head coach. Houston Director of Athletics Dave Maggard announced Friday that top assistant coach Susan Bush will replace former head coach Bill Solberg, who resigned to take a coaching position at FC Milwaukee. Bush, a Houston native who attended St. John's High School, played collegiately at North Carolina, winning two national championships in 1999 and 2000. She served as the Cougars' recruiting coordinator for the last two years. "Susan's been an outstanding recruiter and a great student of the game," Maggard said in release. "She has high visibility and great respect around the country, but especially in the state of Texas. She will continue to be a great asset to our program and soon will have the women's soccer team in position to challenge for the Conference USA championship and gain national recognition." Bush has competed at nearly every level of soccer. She was part of the U.S. National Team from 1998-2003. In 2000, Bush won a gold medal in the Nordic Cups, the Gold Cup and the Australia Cup. Bush was the youngest and only high-school-age player to earn a spot on the national team in residency camp during the run-up to the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup. After finishing her career at North Carolina, Bush was a second-round draft pick of the San Diego Spirit of the WUSA. Her career with the Spirit was cut short due to knee injuries, and she retired shortly thereafter. Bush looks forward to becoming only the third head coach in program history. "I am extremely excited about assuming the Head Coaching position," Bush said in a press release. "I'm looking forward to leading this program and with a dynamic staff, support from the administration and a commitment by the players to achieve a higher standard, I feel confident in the direction we are heading at UH. "I cannot imagine a better opportunity than to lead an NCAA Division I program in my hometown of Houston." Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
