News SPC selects editor COUGAR NEWS STAFF The Student Publications Committee selected the next editor of the University's yearbook during a March 20 meeting. The board voted kinesiology sophomore Dondria Cooper to assume the role of editor in chief of the Houstonian, effective Fall 2007. "I hope that students see the ‘student life,' ‘people' and ‘community' sections as good memories in years to come," Cooper said. "It's something they can show their children and grandchildren that they were a part of." Cooper said that the yearbook should focus attention on increasing advertising revenue and promoting awareness. "I want the students to be more involved," she said. "When at events on campus most students will be like, ‘Oh, we have a yearbook?'" Only 400 students were featured in the 2006-2007 yearbook, Cooper said. Despite promotional efforts, only 300 students have taken photographs for the next edition. As editor in chief, Cooper will be responsible for coordinating staff, approving content and proofreading the final draft of the yearbook before submission to Taylor Publishing, current editor in chief Stephanie Pendergraft said. Cooper's journalistic career began in high school, where she served as co-editor of her school's newspaper. She continued the path at UH, starting at the Houstonian as a photographer during Fall 2006 and becoming community editor in the spring. "It just stuck with me ever since then," Cooper, also a member of The Scholars' Community, said. "I started out with photography, then went to doing spreads, then finally yearbook." Cooper's extracurricular activities may indicate a future in the media, but she intends to use her expected kinesiology degree to launch a career in athletics. "I want to be a sports agent," she said. "Ever since the WNBA came out, roughly 11 years ago, I wanted to do something in sports." Photo-retake shoots will be available April 15 and 17, with details available in Room 151 of the Communication Building. The next yearbook will be available in August for $42. --With additional reporting by Diane Sanchez Send comments to dcnews@mail.uh.edu |
