Cougars make return trip to Austin

UH will compete in Texas Relays after a short rest

by JONG LEE
The Daily Cougar

After only a few days of rest, the Cougar track and field team will head to Austin to compete in the Texas Relays. The meet will begin at noon today on the University of Texas campus, and concludes Saturday.

Houston is coming off a three-win performance last weekend at the LSU Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La. Four athletes and the women's relay team qualified for the NCAA Regional meet, which will be held in Des Moines, Iowa on May 25-26.

Freshman Ashley Bryant took first place in the women's discus event with a throw of 49.54m/162-06. Junior James Lee won the men's discus with a throw of 54.80m/179-09.

"Lee and Bryant did well for us there," UH head coach Leroy Burrell said. "(Junior) Ebonie Floyd competed well. She was a little under the weather there, but I think she gave it a game effort."

Despite last weekend's, Burrell isn't completely satisfied with his team's performance.

"Quite frankly, I'm a bit disappointed in our overall performance as a team, because I don't think we competed very well as a group, (and that's) what you can magnify (as) the importance of this meet this weekend," Burrell said. "But thus far, we've had some pretty good indicators in practice that we're ready to compete. It's just a matter of going out there, getting confidence and getting it done."

This will be the second time in two weeks that the Cougars will be in Austin. Field athletes took part in the Texas Invitational on March 24 and took home two wins and 21 Top 10 finishes.

Last season, the Cougars walked away with four wins at the Texas Relays. including the men''s 4x400 and the 4x200 meter relays.

"We're going up there with pretty much our core group, and try to take a measurement on where we are," Burrell said.
