Sports Poor weather and a loss to UTEP spoil weekend COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES Due to cold and wet weather conditions, the Cougar tennis team had to cancel its Saturday match with Southern at John E. Hoff Courts. The canceled match will not be rescheduled. This was the second of the last three matches for the Cougars that was canceled because of rain. The day before, the Cougars dropped a 4-3 Conference USA match to Texas-El Paso at Hoff Courts. "We didn't do a good job of finishing matches," UH head coach John Severance said in a release. "Give credit to UTEP because they came ready to play and earned this victory." Freshmen Neila Starratt and Vicky Simpson started at the No. 3 doubles position, and gave Houston (13-6, 2-3 C-USA) an 8-3 win. But UTEP came back and took both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to put the Miners ahead 1-0. Freshman Anna Djananova and junior Leila Salek dropped their match 8-6. Seniors Loli Gomez and Sonja Nikolic had a 7-5 lead in their match, but UTEP's Marina Deluca and Isabel Kulaif came back to win the match 9-7. The Miners (10-7, 3-0 C-USA) took a 2-0 lead when Djananova lost in straight sets to Samantha Attard, 6-2, 6-1. The Cougars finally scored when Simpson won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Starratt cut the UTEP lead to 3-2 when she put up a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot. The Cougars fought back, but UTEP ended the match when Gomez fell to Kulaif 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the No. 2 hole. Salek took a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win to make the final score 4-3. UH will finish its regular season with matches at
Nevada and Middle Tennessee State next weekend.
