Seminar addresses plight of migrants 

Speakers will discuss the impact of recent protests 
for immigration rights

A two-day seminar will examine the effects of last year's immigrant-rights marches calling the nation's attention to immigrant issues from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the University Hilton.

"¡Sí se Puede! Immigration, Latino Growth and the New Voices in American Politics" will feature professors, journalists and officials with insight into the movements will consider the effects of immigration and immigrant activism on the American labor movement, legislation, politics and social movements.

"This is a significant time," Lorenzo Cano, associate director of the UH Center for Mexican American Studies, said in a release. "There are a lot of new voices out there, but many are from a critical mass of immigrant activists, not the old Chicano voices."

In addition to lectures, photojournalist David Bacon will display photos from Images and Voices of Indigenous Mexican Migrants, his new book chronicling immigrant activism, and filmmaker Yolanda Cruz will show Sueno Binacionales and its record of Mexican migrants in California.

The seminar is hosted by the CMAS and is free to the public.
