Cougars to mix things up in Norman

Floyd to make her debut in 400-meter run;
Smith will sit out this time around

After collecting four regional marks last week at the Texas Relays, the Cougars will head to Norman, Okla., for the John Jacobs Invitational.

The meet starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Oklahoma University campus.

The meet will begin with the John Jacobs Collegiate Distance Carnival, starting with the 3000-meter steeplechase, followed by the 800-, 1500- and 5000-meter runs.

The John Jacobs Collegiate Invitation will begin with the field events at 11 a.m. Saturday, and the track events will begin two hours later.

"To this point of the season, we've really tried to figure out ways on the women's side to get a few more of our athletes (to progress) from one-event athletes from the indoor season, to two-event athletes in the outdoor season," UH head coach Leroy Burrell said. "This weekend, (that) is what we're going to be working on."

Junior Ebonie Floyd will make her season debut in the 400-meter run, and that's something Burrell is looking forward to.

"We're looking for a good performance from (Floyd)," Burrell said.

At the Texas Relays, junior Tramaine Smith ran a personal best in the 100-meters with a time of 10.41 seconds.

However, Smith will not be competing at this weekend's meet.

Houston is just less than a month away from the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, which will be held May 10 to 12 at Rice.

Burrell said the team needs to take care of business and get some other athletes qualified in the few meets that precede the conference meet.

"We want all of our athletes who are going to participate in conference to put up some solid marks that are indicative of what we think they can do at the conference meet," Burrell said. "We basically want to go to a meet or two and just fill out all cylinders as a team, in the field and on the track."
