UH Libraries will be honored this afternoon for one facet of its plan to reach out to the community, winning "Best of Show" and taking first place in "Logo and Brand" for its logo at the first Texas Library Association Public Relations Branding Iron Awards competition. The logo, a network of interlocking swoops, is incorporated throughout the M.D. Anderson Library building and promotional materials and was intended to help make the surrounding community more aware of the libraries, Carolyn Meanley, coordinator of events and communications for UH Libraries, said. "We needed a logo that would be a brand for us," she said. "Whenever you see this, you think of the very friendly, knowledgeable services these people provide." Winning the award, she said, is just another motivation to continue improving service. "It just gives us more reason to say, ‘Let's keep pushing this,'" she said. "We want to be a powerful center on this campus, and we are developing quality service to go with it." Doris Huang, senior graphic designer at the Office of Creative Services, said she developed the logo by envisioning how it would be incorporated into the recently re modeled building. "It kind of brings a theme to the whole library," she said. "I wanted to bring some kind of classic element to this logo so they could use it for branding services." Huang said she was glad her work has brought recognition to the program. "I'm very honored and excited that I can win this award for the University and also for the UH library," she said. "I'm very pleased to hear people like my design." Meanley said the library is continuing to look for new services and opportunities it can provide, and is working on re-vamping the library's Web site and engaging in more outreaches to local high schools and UH students. "We want to be a player in our greater community," she said. "It takes a long time to build a quality program, and we've got a quality program we're going to continue to build." dcnews@mail.uh.edu
