Cougars to wrap things up in Reno

Maybe some time away from home will be good for the UH tennis team.

The Cougars have been able to play only one match in the last three weeks. Because of inclement weather in Houston, the team has had to cancel two of its last three matches.

Things should be different this weekend in Reno, Nev., where the Cougars will play a pair of matches to end their regular season, starting with Nevada (11-8) at 11 a.m. today. UH will wrap up the weekend with a meeting against Middle Tennessee State (6-11) at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Cougars (13-6) have been nails on the road this season and take a 5-2 road record into today's match.

UH head coach John Severance cited a distinct benefit of being able to win away from home.

"A change of scenery is always nice," Severance said. "In order to be a good team you have to win on the road.

The Conference USA Tournament is away from home, and these last two matches will prepare us for that competition."

Severance is also confident the recent shortage of matches won't hinder the Cougars this weekend.

"The funny thing is that the only time we've been rained out is when it's time to play a match," said Severance. "We haven't missed a beat on the practice court. We've been crisp and competitive. Hopefully it carries over to this weekend."

The Cougars will try to use these final two regular season contests to build up some momentum heading into the conference tournament, which is scheduled to begin Thursday in Tulsa, Okla.

Severance believes this weekend's matches could have a significant impact on the remainder of the Cougars' season.

"These matches will ultimately help seeding for the C-USA Tournament," he said.
