LIFE & ARTS
Innovative dance troupe blends art forms Group set to perform in May combines
dance, drama
COUGAR LIFE & ARTS SERVICES A New York-based dance troupe that blends different expressions of art will make its Houston debut in May. The internationally acclaimed Big Dance Theater is known for unorthodox methods of entertaining a crowd, putting on a show that combines dance, literary narratives, dramas, multi-media effects and music. The Japan Society commissioned Big Dance Theater to create The Other Here, a lively story that possesses Eastern and Western influences. The show combines contemporary Okinawan pop music with classical Okinawan music sprinkled with Japanese short stories. On stage, the narrative shifts from a good-humored sales meeting, a conflict between a master and his servant and a story about a man and his most prized possession: a carp. Big Dance Theater was founded in 1991 and has been praised for its innovative performances. Send comments to dcshobiz@mail.uh.edu |
