News RHA election nearing Executive board applications require
essays,
COUGAR NEWS STAFF Applications to run in Friday's Residence Halls Association Executive Board elections are due at noon today. Interested students should turn completed applications in to Cougar Place Area Coordinator and RHA Adviser Lin Crowson, who said serving on the board is a good opportunity to get involved on campus. "It's a lot of work, but you really do have an opportunity to make changes, to be an agent for change in the halls," she said. "It's a more visible position than people would think." The executive board's main purpose is to improve the quality of life on campus by planning events and activities as well as facilitating dialogue between residents and Residential Life and Housing administrators and staff regarding problems or concerns. "RHA's role is to gauge what it is the students want and then mobilize students to go for whatever it is," she said, citing RHA's recent forum regarding Internet in the residence halls as an example. "One of their biggest roles is to enhance the residential living community … and just make it a fun place to live." Crowson said this year's applications require essays or other samples related to the desired position for inclusion in a booklet that will be distributed to residents prior to the elections to assist them in making an informed decision. Students interested in being considered for executive board appointed positions, comprised of vice president of recreation and wellness, national communications coordinator, and secretary and treasurer, should also fill out applications to inform the board of their interest. "We're genuinely interested in getting anyone involved who wants to represent the students who live on campus and get involved in a campus leadership opportunity," Crowson said. Once elected, students will be expected to attend a conference in June and training in August, and will have a required number of office hours per week beginning in the fall. The election will be conducted Friday morning and the results announced in the afternoon. Questions or concerns should be directed to Crowson at yfisher@uh.edu. Send comments to dcnews@mail.uh.edu |
