Cougars close season mired in a losing streak

The UH tennis team dropped a pair of matches to Middle Tennessee State and Nevada this past weekend at the Wilbur D. May Tennis Complex in Reno, Nev. With the losses, the Cougars ended their regular season on a three-match losing streak.

The Cougars (13-8) dropped a 4-2 decision to Middle Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon with four matches having to be decided in a third set.

Playing in her final regular season match as a Cougar, senior Loli Gomez defeated MTSU's Ann-Kristen Siljestrom 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 in singles play. Freshman Vicky Simpson was another bright spot for the team as she defeated Pooja Kommireddi 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.

"Our team learned a valuable lesson about how important it is to finish matches. It's a lesson I would rather have the team learn today than next week at the conference tournament," UH head coach John Severance said in a release.

UH opened the weekend by playing FILA Collegiate No. 62 Nevada on Friday. The Cougars were shut out 7-0, but Severance believes that the score was not indicative of how his team played.

"This was a much closer match than the score indicated," Severance said in a release. "I was pleased with the way that we fought on every court. Despite the loss, we left the court as a better tennis team."

The Conference USA Tournament is set to begin Thursday in Tulsa, Okla. The league office will release the seedings for the tournament on Monday.
