Letters to the Editor Concealed handguns would offer protection on campus To the editor: While UH may have officers patrolling the University 24 hours a day, unless there is an officer who follows each student and employee on campus, the University will not be able to guarantee the safety of its students and employees. It is our right as humans to be able to defend ourselves from another person who intentionally tries to harm us. The only way for students and employees to protect themselves from the thieves, rapists and murderers who prey upon students and employees is for the University to support legislation in Austin that would allow concealed handguns on campus. According to the Texas Penal Code, it is a felony to bring a weapon onto the campus. But the only people who follow the law are the decent, responsible people who know how to properly use a weapon. The current law allows only criminals to target the unarmed people on campus. A criminal never says to himself, "Darn, I cannot commit mass murder at my university because they don't allow guns on campus." Instead, he thinks, "My university is the perfect place to commit homicide since the only people who have weapons are the understaffed and under-funded police, and by the time they get to me my work will be done."
