Life & Arts Shows offer a good excuse to put junk off by RUTHIE RODRIGUEZ
This weekend's concerts will offer a valid excuse for why you haven't completed your end-of-the-semester assignments or started studying for finals. Houston-based rock quartet Sharks and Sailors will open for indie rock trio The Life and Times and The Appleseed Cast at 9 p.m. tonight at Walter's on Washington, 4215 Washington Ave. Kansas-based headlining act The Appleseed Cast offers a subtle take on alternative rock. The band doesn't get carried away with dramatic solos and, for the most part, retains a laid-back tone. If you're in the mood for an energetic show, don't bother staying for this act, because it'll probably make you go night-night. For a band with a rougher edge, check out The Marked Men when the Denton natives bring their upbeat power-pop south. The Marked Men, Something Fierce, The Points and Born Liars will perform at 9 p.m. tonight at Rudyard's, 2010 Waugh Drive. If you're hungry for something with a Southern twang, don't miss Nickel Creek. Sara Watkins (violin), Chris Thile (mandolin) and Sean Watkins (guitar) work together to deliver pieces infused with an lively bluegrass feel. The trio will stop in on its The Farewell (For Now) Tour at 7 p.m. tonight at Meridian, 1503 Chartres St. Tapes ‘n Tapes will perform with Harlem Snakes at 8 p.m. Sunday at Numbers, 300 Westheimer Road. Tapes ‘n Tapes is a Minneapolis-based indie rock quartet characterized by layers of melodic keys courtesy of multi-instrumentalist Matt Kretzman. Check out the band as it performs songs from its 2005 debut album, The Loon. Send comments to dcshobiz@mail.uh.edu |
