News Sunday stroll to benefit babies National March of Dimes event, the organization's biggest fundraiser, will feature walk on UH campus by LEE CLARK
An estimated 35,000 Houstonians will exchange their house slippers for walking shoes Sunday as they walk to save babies in the March of Dimes' annual WalkAmerica. The 11th UH WalkAmerica is a six-mile walk around UH beginning 9 a.m. Sunday at Robertson Stadium. "The March of Dimes is extremely grateful to have UH students and faculty helping to communicate the importance of raising funds to fight premature birth," Ernestine Piña-Sandoval, director of communications for the Houston affiliate of March of Dimes, said. Three additional WalkAmerica sites -- at UH-Clear Lake, Greenspoint Mall and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion -- will also be available for Houston-area participants. "The March of Dimes is also very proud to have the unwavering support of Dr. Elwynn Lee, Chancellor of Student Affairs, who is a member of the March of Dimes Board of Directors," Piña-Sandoval said. "His ‘can-do' attitude is inspiring and lends to our continued success in partnering with UH to ensure that every baby has a healthy start, so they too may one day have the opportunity to learn and lead." WalkAmerica is the March of Dimes' largest fundraiser. Since the event went national in 1970, $1.7 billion has been raised to save the lives of babies. In 2006 UH faculty and staff raised more than $18,000 for WalkAmerica. The money raised by walkers goes toward research into premature birth and how it can be prevented, as well as education to help women have healthy pregnancies and recognize the signs of preterm labor.
