News Charity walk comes to UH Aga Khan Foundation will raise money for poverty relief Sunday morning on campus by JENNIFER EARLY
The Aga Khan Foundation USA aims to increase awareness and raise funds for the fight against global poverty during its Partnership Walk at 11 a.m. Sunday on the UH campus. Accounting and political science sophomore Hina Musa, a Partnership Walk volunteer, said walks will be held simultaneously in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles. "(America) has a lot of luxuries that people in other countries don't have," Musa said. "The Partnership Walk is a good way to help, because I know it helps with global poverty so much. "None of my time is going to be wasted." Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. at the University Hilton. Opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. will kick off the three-kilometer Partnership Walk at 11:45 a.m., which will begin and end at the Cullen Performance Hall. KPRC-TV anchor Jerome Gray, KHOU-TV anchor Vicente Arenas and KTRK-TV reporter Miya Shay will open the event. Distinguished guests include U.S. Rep. Al Green and UH President Jay Gogue. Lunch will be provided at 1 p.m. All funds raised by the Partnership Walk will go directly to AKF USA projects. AKF USA is a private, non-denominational, non-profit organization that strives to alleviate hunger, poverty, disease and illiteracy on an irrational scale. "One of the biggest projects we are doing is in East Africa to help preschools," Musa said. "What makes this program so unique is they're getting community members and teaching them how to run the preschool. So far it's helped 55,000 children." Faisal Ali, a Partnership Walk volunteer and UH alumnus, said inspiration to become a volunteer came after seeing what the AKF USA does overseas for global poverty. "A lot of the entrepreneurs (in East Africa and Asia) build their businesses through (AKF USA's) microfinance agency," Ali said. "They start off with $100 loans, and what happens is eventually more and more people get involved and they are able to rely on their own business instead of having someone else send them money." Sponsors of the event include UH, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The World Bank, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Johnson & Johnson.
