Student teacher earns honor

McGrew focuses on teaching at-risk children, conducting research

Cougar News Service

The national University Council for Educational Administration named UH education doctorate student Allegra McGrew as the 2006 Barbara L. Jackson Scholar.

"I am honored," McGrew said in a release. "Being selected is an exceptionally exciting opportunity for me."

McGrew's focus is in educational leadership, and she works at the Fort Bend Independent School District full time as an instructional technology specialist, assisting in staff development with classroom technologies.

McGrew also works with low income, at-risk students to research equity in education and will present a paper on her study on the impact of technology on student achievement at the 2007 Texas Computer Education Association Convention.

McGrew's professors nominated her for the award.

"Allegra is making a difference in the lives of students in her school district through the application of technology to enhance instruction in low performing schools," professor Doris Prater, chair of the UH Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Studies, said in a release. "Her research in social justice issues as they relate to K-12 environments shows great promise."

McGrew said she plans to eventually teach at the university level and ultimately become the president or chancellor of a university.

The UCEA has been recognizing outstanding minority students with the Barbara L. Jackson Scholar program since 2004.

Students who receive the honor are paired with UCEA mentors and given the opportunity to attend lectures and seminars to assist them in their educational leadership goals.

The College of Education offers close to 40 academic degree programs and works closely with area schools to foster academic success.
