Sports Tourney hopes on the line for UH by JONG LEE
The Cougars a one-game lead over Tulsa for eighth place in Conference USA going into their final game of the regular season. So what would have been just another rivalry game against Rice becomes something much larger. If the Cougars win, they control their own destiny. If they choose to go the other route, their postseason aspirations will be placed in the hands of Tulsa, which stands at 2-5 in C-USA. Houston (9-9, 3-5 C-USA) will face crosstown rival Rice for its final game of the season. The match will kick off 7 p.m. Friday at Robertson Stadium. Rice (10-6-1, 2-6 C-USA) is only one conference win away from Houston, and with a win the Owls could also keep their Conference USA Tournament hopes alive. Head coach Solberg said they would play hard no matter where their record stands. "Rice has great speed up top and good athleticism across the field," Solberg said. "They are so much better than their record indicates. The Cougars will celebrate Friday's match with Senior Night. Seniors Kristen Cooper, Jennifer Dry, Sarah Fisher, Sophia Mundy and Heather Williams will be honored. "The seniors have been incredible," Solberg said, "They are a special class." Houston is 2-2-1 all-time against Rice, losing two of its last three contest against the Owls. "We told them (seniors) if we don't win, they will
be playing their last collegiate game ever," Solberg said. "I told them
I don't want this to be the last game I coach them or the last practice
this week. Let's keep this thing going."
