Navy ad drive unfurls its sails

Students work with professional agency based in California

Honor, courage and commitment -- these are the three principles that Cougar Concepts, an advertising applications class offered by the School of Communication, will implement in its campaign for the U.S. Navy.

"We want to change peoples' perceptions, make clear what jobs the U.S. Navy has to offer and the benefits from after you finish the program and enter the work force," Janaile Castillo, a Cougar Concepts public relations coordinator and a communication senior, said.

Cougar Concepts has partnered up with EdVenture Partners, a California-based company that serves as a liaison between universities and businesses, to offer the opportunity to create and design a full advertising/marketing campaign.

The campaign will target people between the ages of 18 and 24 who attend community colleges such as Houston Community College, where Discovery Fest, a Cougar Concepts awareness event, will take place Tuesday and Nov. 8.

"The first day of class we are given a list of departments. Once assigned, coordinators are then elected," Castillo said.

Each coordinator is responsible for his or her team. Each week, they are required to submit a duty list to EdVenture Partners.

Ideas must be presented to EdVenture Partners for approval. At the end of the project Cougar Concepts, is required to present its take on the campaign's success.

"The U.S. Navy wants … to focus on the benefits such as money for school and paid vacations," Castillo said. "A lot of the benefits go unnoticed by people looking for a career in the U.S. Navy."

Discovery Fest, the event planned to create awareness of the U.S. Navy's benefits, will be held next week at the HCC Central campus.

"We will have interactive games to inform students and promote awareness," Castillo said. "We will not be representing the U.S. Navy but simply running the marketing event."
