News Child center helps pupil Daycare sets up blood drive to help student combat leukemia by Gabrielle Lyons
The UH Child Care Center will be sponsoring a blood drive from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday for a child from the Center who was diagnosed with leukemia. Madison Taylor left the Center six months ago after being diagnosed with the form of cancer that affects the blood. Sherry Howard, director of the Center, described Taylor as "a beautiful young girl (who) started with (the Center) as an infant so we've gotten to watch her (grow up)." After hearing the news that Taylor had been diagnosed with leukemia and would no longer attend school, "(the Center was) pretty shook up," she said. "We want to continue to be supportive and for (the family) to know that we have not forgotten about them." The Center will also sell sweets with a ‘M' theme, such as M&M cookies, marble cake and muffins, because of her name. The Center will also accept donations on behalf of the family. "Twenty (people) is basically what (M.D. Anderson) said would make it worth their time to come out here, but I think we only had ten donors last time," Howard said. "They screen so we might get 20 who try and then we only get ten that can actually give blood. "This could be her last round of intensive (chemotherapy) and if things went well she could be in remission and maybe she can come back to school," she said. "So we'd like to be hopeful that we won't need (another blood drive) but if we do, of course. We're determined." For more information on the blood drive, call (713)
