News New organization educates students in crime prevention by JENNIFER EARLY
UH's new group Students Against Violence Everywhere will teach a self-defense class at its first meeting, 7 p.m. Thursday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. "The main purpose is to give students awareness about such things as rape and domestic violence," said business administration senior Max Ivanitzki, founder of SAVE. "We will teach people about self-defense training, so they will know what to do in those kinds of situations." Ivanitzki said a martial arts instructor would be on-hand to teach students self-defense techniques. SAVE is a student-initiated organization with adult advisors where students can learn about alternatives to violence, including crime prevention and coflict management. SAVE strives to engage, empower, encourage and educate students about ways to decrease the potential for violence on campus. The 1989 death of Charlotte, North Carolina high school student Alex Orange, who was killed trying to break up a fight, prompted grieving students to form the first SAVE organization Today there are over 185,000 members in 1,600 chapters across the United States. Additional information about SAVE is available at
