Life & Arts Ball brings out quirky revelers Bottoms Up Sarah Tressler When it comes to Halloween parties that cater to a fun-loving crowd over the age of 16, there are a few big events in Houston that are worth mentioning. For spook-tacular shindigs of this nature, we must turn our attention to Joe Applewhite's annual Pimp N' Ho Ball, which was held at Warehouse Live this year. The fabulous Grand Master Flash was the feature entertainer for Applewhite's popular Halloween bash, which has been on hiatus for the last two years. Plastic Angel, one of Europe's most popular trance DJs, was the headlining performer in the second room. The newly opened Warehouse Live was the biggest venue in which the party has ever been scheduled. It was previously hosted at Prague (now M Bar) and Spy (now Visions Night Club). Scandalously clad ladies and bejeweled guys meandered between the two rooms that compose Warehouse Live. I saw more fishnets, garters and high heels than I ever had before. Over-the-top costumes were the norm, so if you make it to the ball next year, be sure to dress appropriately. Men, get a big, puffy jacket, preferably made of some kind of fake animal fur. Pair it with a shiny satin shirt in bright red or purple and a fedora in any shade but black or brown. Platform shoes that have goldfish in the heel are optional, but will earn you extra points from the, uh, ladies. Girls, get something that looks like it's made of more straps and strings than actual cloth and find creative ways to wear it in public without looking like a complete — well, actually, this is the Pimp N' Ho Ball, so you get where I'm going. Here's a tip: If you wear anything made of vinyl, sprinkle the insides of it with baby powder so you can slip it on without sticking. A body painter was on site for the brave souls who wanted their costumes spray-painted on. I saw one girl wearing shoes, pants and paint. (From far away, it just looks like a really tight shirt.) Get your tickets early if handing out Smarties to rug rats in Spider-Man costumes doesn't sound appealing for Halloween next year. Send comments to dcshobiz@mail.uh.edu |
