News Search under way for next Cougar editor Cougar News Staff The Daily Cougar is beginning the search for a new editor in chief for Spring 2007. The Cougar is seeking applicants with newspaper experience and the ability to "keep a cool head," Kristen Young, the Cougar’s current editor in chief, said. "We’re looking for someone who works well with other people, especially under pressure," she said. "It’s kind of a behind-the-scenes job. We set the tone." Applications are available in the Cougar business office, Room 151 in the Communication Building, and must be returned by 2 p.m. Friday. Experience at the Cougar is preferred, but not required to apply, and applicants should include samples of newspaper writing. In addition to the written application, interested students will be interviewed by the Student Publications Committee at its Nov. 14 meeting on their ideas concerning the direction of the Cougar. "They should have some kind of idea on what they want to change, what they want to improve in the paper," Young said. The editor in chief must also stand by his or her decisions, she said, even if they are unpopular. "You can’t second-guess things," she said. The position can be demanding and rewarding, Young said. "It’s a full-time job; you’ll always take it home with you," she said. "You’re always on call. "You learn a lot, not just about the newspaper business, but about how to manage people," she said. "Even though your name’s not on the front page every day, I can see myself in it." The editor in chief can also be one of the most influential student positions on campus, said current Managing Editor Matt Dulin, who served as editor in chief from Spring 2004 through Fall 2005. "The editor of The Daily Cougar is the most important student-held position on campus," he said. Although the position is demanding in almost every aspect, he said, "It was the best job I could ever imagine having in college." For more information, call (713) 743-5350.
